IN AMORICA (East to West 2003-2008)

I started this project in 2003 taking pictures of people in the streets of NYC, in 2004 I came back to United States, I was in LA and San Francisco shooting people in California.

Selecting and checking the contacts of those days in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, the project defined itself. The whole East/West was surprising homogenous, with very strong visual links and all kinds of psychological, sociological and physical connections between completely different people: students, actresses, musicians, unemployed people.

I always work in the same way. My stay in each city last one month approximately, in spring. During this period I look tirelessly for models, following my intuition. I go through street markets, comercial streets…and I take pictures of the individual in the precise place I found him. Three photographs are enough. I also shake advantage of any characteristic background (a wall, a building…) and I avoid any kind of artifice. Just as with styling or scenography. Any external factor, except the light, affects the final result.

Comunications is a basic tool intervening in the moment we take a photo, a visual communication by means of which a strong link between the photographer and the subject is created. You take this person out of his reality and through his curiosity and trust you make him yours for a moment. In a instant life goes on.

When I see her at the fea market in Melrose Place Avenue it takes me a moment to realize that she is Chloë Sevigny. Tall, blonde and whiteout hangover on a Sunday morning. I explain my project to her and she says that she likes it/ in a nearby wall she faces the lens/ but she really knows what I want/ after three shots.../ She disappears.
